Music Video Monday

To give at least some degree of regularity in posting for what will otherwise be a blogue consisting of whatever strikes our collective fancies whenever that fancy may strike, every Monday I will post a music video and any comments I may have on the video or the band.

Every Monday, feel free to comment and give your opinion of the artist, or personal interpretation of the video.  (Or some other third option.)

Most videos I post will be Metal, or metal-influenced, but not all of them.  If it's not your thing, I understand, but those of you looking to expand your horizons may come to find something you like through this blogue.

Today's video is Almost Again by Strapping Young Lad.  There are very few musicians I will refer to as geniuses, but I certainly count Devin Townsend among them.  I hear from some people that Metal is a soulless music that doesn't convey any feeling or deeper meaning.  This couldn't possibly be farther from the truth, and this video provides great evidence to the contrary.  Metal is a legitimate art-form/medium of expression, a global phenomena, and this blogguer's lifesblood.   Yes, it has a tendency to be a more aggressive, and dark art-form, and doesn't appeal to a wide audience....but that's kind of the point.

I hope you guys/gals enjoy the music and video and stick around for future Music Video Mondays.  Let me know what you think, and also what you felt.  This song sends chills up my spine.  Seriously...plus the video clip is really fucking deep.  I won't spoil it, but if you watch it a couple times you may understand the impact/message.

  1. Maybe it's just me, but this isn't metal, at least not what was once real metal. I'm talking of course of early Metallica stuff, Master of Puppets anyone? And early Ozzy/Randy Rhoads, Megadeth, and Testament stuff...That is real metal. Not this nu metal shit that sounds like 16 years olds crying and bitching...As much as I do respect Townsend (because he is quite musically gifted) I hate most of his music.

Here is a song I wrote and recorded about two years ago, its something I wrote off the top of my head one day and recorded it at a buddies house...it's called Apocalypse Under Water, you might have to cycle for it...enjoy.

  2. I understand where you are coming from, but this isn't nu-metal as it gets. I have yet to ever hear blast beats in nu-metal. Nu-metal is by and large dumbed-down metal appealing to mallcore kiddies and having lyrics about girlfriends and alcohol. I hate it too. Townsend writes progressive music and incorporates extreme metal into this particular band..with a little industrial flavor.

And I'm glad you specified EARLY metallica, because I think we can agree their new stuff is not metal. Try not to limit your conception of what "real metal" is to classic 80's thrash bands, however. It has grown a lot since then and covers such polar opposite genres as Funeral Doom and Power Metal. "Metal" is merely an umbrella term that covers a LOT of subgenres just as "Chimpanzee" is an umbrella term for both Pan Troglodytes and Pan Paniscus.

In any case, as for the video. I personally find the song to be quite powerful, and the clip is amazing. A robot/android being built by humans, looks and sees the violence of its creators and decides to shut itself down. This isn't girlfriends and alcohol; this is a statement of destructive as well as creative human nature. You could even say it makes a statement about determinism vs. free will.

And I enjoyed your song, normally when I visit a myspace and check out people's stuff it is like...poorly arranged garage-band/nintendo noises. So it was a pleasant surprise.
